Aguarotoche – Downtown Santiago Venezuelan soul food with a deep-fried edge. Walk in and you’re hit with the intoxicating scent of masa and meat—hot, heavy, unapologetic. This isn’t your dainty empanada joint. These beauties are fried thick, almost donut-like in texture, crisped to a golden shell that gives way to molten fillings. I tried three: Carne Mechada, Pabellón, and Cazón (that’s shark). Each bite reminded me that sometimes food isn’t meant to be clean or delicate—it’s meant to be messy, oily, real. They don’t skimp on flavour or size, and the prices? More than fair for the belly-hugging satisfaction they serve up. The locals know it, and you should too. Not health food. Not trying to be. The food is good; they have a wide variety of empanadas and Venezuelan pastries. They also have drinks like malta, papelón, and coffee. It does seem a bit small for the number of people they serve. On the plus side, there's a paid parking lot across the street where you can park and go have breakfast in peace. Yes, I would go back.

The place is clean and pleasant. I ordered a shredded beef empanada and pastries; both were delicious. The pastries arrived lukewarm, and the empanada was excellent. As a suggestion, it would be beneficial to improve communication among the staff, as I overheard a conversation in a loud and somewhat inappropriate tone while I was eating, which slightly detracted from the experience.
